Liquid Protein Feed

Use: Feed Supplement

Colostrum is a thick yellow fluid, rich in protein, growth factors, and immune or transfer factors produced by the mammary glands during the first few days of lactation. It contains immunoglobins, lactoferrin (a protein that transports iron to red blood cells), leukocytes, cytokines and lymphokines, vitamins, glycoproteins and sulphur—all essential to the developing organism. Liquid protein feed is a whey colostrum product that can be used for a number of conditions, including mastitis.

Mastitis is almost always caused by bacteria. These micro-organisms produce toxins that damage the milk-producing tissue of the mammary gland. The tissue becomes inflamed to eliminate the bacteria. The inflammation reduces milk production and changes the composition of the milk (usually increases blood components and reduces milk constituents). Injecting liquid protein feed into the teat is one option available to organic farmers to treat mastitis.

A farmer in Texas has a veterinarian niece in Iowa who uses a colostrum product on horses. He was so impressed by the results that he tried it himself and was really pleased. He now uses it on any of his animals that looks unwell - dogs, cats, goats and sheep.
