Organic crop systems can provide similar yields and higher economic returns than a conventional corn-soybean rotation, according to 13 years of data from a side-by-side comparison at Iowa State University’s Neely-Kinyon Research and Demonstration Farm. The Long-Term Agroecological Research Experiment, which began in 1998, shows that organic crops can remain competitive with conventional crops even during the three-year transition.
It is often said that organic yields cannot feed the world. For one, feeding the world is all about poverty and access to land and has nothing to do with production methods. In any case, the debate continues about yields. The Rodale institute has done some great long term research to prove that organic yields are comparable or superior to conventional. Here is a nother media story about it:
Many of these refugees have extensive experience in agriculture. In the settlements of Tezu, they are now farming exclusively organically. Since they have farming experience that there may be farms across Canada that need labour and might also be able to provide shelter.
