Managing Mycotoxins in Feed
Extremely wet and cool conditions promote moulds and toxins in cereal crops and stored feeds. In isolated cases of mycotoxins, one can usually rely on blending to reduce the concentrations to acceptable levels. But mycotoxins are more prevalent this year. Therefore, feed additives may be necessary to help mitigate the effects of mycotoxins. Anecdotal evidence and traditional knowledge suggest that the followin feed additives may be effective.
Redmond conditioner
A mineral colloidal silicate, which contains over 50 mineral compounds. Increases feed utilization, suppresses toxins and decreases aflatoxin levels in milk. (Not to be used with bicarbonate of soda). Suggested feeding rate: 4 oz/head/day in dairy cattle.
Bentonite Clay
A natural sodium bentonite that increases feed consumption, feed efficiency, and milk fat levels. Also has a known ability to neutralize toxins. Suggested feeding rate: 2% of total feed ration.
Nutra-fix dry
A strong probiotic used to augment beneficial microbial activity, ensure competitive exclusion, and neutralize toxins with the aid of mannan-oligosaccharides. Feeding: 2 oz/head/day in dairy cattle.
Bio-Lac
A microbial growth stimulant with live plant enzymes to enhance efficiency and ensure optimum health and productivity. Suggested feeding rate: 15 grams/head/day in dairy cattle.
Charcoal
One of the most powerful adsorbents known. Excellent capacity to capture toxins or toxic elements. Also has the ability to neutralize pathogens. Suggested feeding rate: 1 oz/ head/day in dairy cattle.
Diatomaceous Earth
This microscopic seashell containing 15 trace minerals is an excellent binder of toxic compounds. It also acts as an intestinal dewormer that punctures large parasites and worms causing them to die by dehydration. Also used 50/50 with sulphur as an external duster and delouser for mange or flies. Suggested feeding rate: free choice or 1 oz/ head/day in dairy cattle.
