From Field to Feeder
Providing Nutritional Supplements For Poultry
Organic feeds are complete feed rations containing all of the nutrients and minerals required for healthy growth. Nevertheless, nutritional supplements are sometimes needed, particularly if the diet is ‘diluted’ by additional feed or foraging.
Crushed oyster shell or aragonite provide additional calcium for laying birds
Organic layer mash contains adequate calcium for egg production if the birds are only eating mash. However, if the diet is supplemented with grain, table scraps or pasture, the hens will need additional calcium. Crushed oyster shell or aragonite (a marine mineral) can be offered free choice to provide additional calcium.
Grit is essential for digestion
To digest their food, poultry need to consume grit. If birds are free-ranging, they will likely find natural sources of grit. However, if the ground is covered with snow or if the birds are confined in a barn or pen, they may need additional grit. Note that crushed oyster shell does not work as grit; rather, it dissolves after being consumed and provides calcium for the birds. Ideally, grit should be provided in a separate hopper.
Control disease with apple cider vinegar, hydrogen peroxide and diatomaceous earth
To help prevent disease, apple cider vinegar or 35% hydrogen peroxide can be added to drinking water at a rate of 30 ppm, 0.03 ml/l or 0.004 oz/gal. (US). Diatomaceous earth can be sprinkled on the feed to help control internal parasites.
Kelp provides micronutrients that improve the immune system
Kelp is included in most organic feeds. Additional kelp can be offered free choice to provide micronutrients, improve health and reduce leg problems in broilers.
Probiotics inoculate the digestive system
A probiotic containing lactobacillus bacteria and enzymes from crushed barley grass helps to develop the required micro flora in the digestive system. Probiotics improve digestion, increase feed uptake, improve disease resistance, and generally lead to good health.
